Dental Care

Good dental care is as important for your pet as it is for you - possibly more so, because our pets don't brush their teeth daily! Proper dental care not only prevents bad breath and periodontal (gum) disease, but also prevents infection spreading through the blood stream to your pet's liver, kidneys and heart. This bacterial infection can lead to permanent organ damage, affecting your pet's overall health.

Regular dental cleanings are the best way to stop periodontal disease before it starts. Dental cleanings are done under general anesthesia. Both ultrasonic and hand scaling are done to remove tartar and plaque from your pet's teeth, followed by a high-speed polishing, and then a fluoride treatment. Most of our equipment is the same that you find in your dentist's office and we promise your pet will go home with sweet smelling breath and a pearly white smile! We recommend annual dental exams, radiographs, and prophylaxis for all pets over three years of age. Every pet is different and some pets may require a cleaning more than once a year.

Colony Animal Hospital features a state-of-the-art, fully-equipped dental suite. The dental suite is equipped with two dentistry stations, circulating warm water blankets, digital dental radiology, and equipment to monitor EKG, CO2 levels, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels. It is our goal to make your pet's dental cleaning as safe and comfortable as possible.
