Senior Pet Care

Although most pet owners probably wish that their pets can live as long as they do—if not longer—they actually age about seven times faster than humans do. Larger breeds age typically age at an even faster rate. This is why it’s so important for your senior pet to have a comprehensive wellness exam at least twice a year. At Colony Animal Hospital in Newport News, we love senior pets and want them to be healthy and live as long as possible. That’s why we place a strong emphasis on preventive care with our senior pet services, starting with the comprehensive wellness exam.

About the Senior Wellness Exam

Pets of all ages should have a comprehensive wellness exam at least once a year, but for senior pets, we recommend two exams per year to accommodate the changes that come with age. Arthritis, obesity, senility, dental disease...the list of potential health problems that a senior pet can develop goes on and on. But with a bi-annual wellness exam, we can catch these problems in their early stages and intervene with treatment. The sooner we detect and treat an illness, the greater chances your pet has of recovery. If you’ve noticed any changes in your pet’s appearance, behavior, or eating habits, please let us know during these visits.

Depending on your pet’s health profile, we may also recommend a senior blood profile and urinalysis as part of the wellness exam. This allow us to determine the status of your pet’s organ function and determine if there are any diseases present, such as diabetes. Other common tests for senior pets include a blood pressure check, thyroid test, and an eye pressure measurement. Just as with pets of any age, we rely on diagnostic imaging technology (radiology, ultrasound, etc.) when necessary to examine your pet internally.

At-Home Senior Pet Care

In addition to the bi-annual senior pet exam, we recommend that you take the following issues into account for at-home care:
