Pet Diagnostic Care

We all wish that our pets could tell us where they’re hurting or if they ate something they shouldn’t have. But they can’t, so veterinarians must rely on diagnostic testing. Colony Animal Hospital in Newport News offers ultrasound, digital radiology, and other diagnostic capabilities to examine your dog or cat internally. Our facility is also equipped with an extensive diagnostic laboratory to perform screenings, with immediate results.

Pet Radiology

Colony Animal Hospital is equipped with the latest digital pet x-ray technology to provide your pet with the most accurate diagnosis possible. With this technology, we can quickly produce high quality images of your pet’s internal structures in a matter of seconds. We often rely on X-rays to evaluate the musculoskeletal and reproductive systems, heart, lungs, and gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. In addition, we are capable of performing radiographic contrast studies such as barium series (stomach, intestines, etc.) and positive contrast cystograms (urinary bladder) to better define problems with the gastrointestinal and urinary systems.

We send pet X-rays to a board-certified veterinary radiologist for consultation, and results are usually available the same day. These images can be digitally enhanced and e-mailed to specialists anywhere in the country, if necessary. These images can also be emailed to other hospitals or to specialists anywhere in the world or copied to a DVD to include with medical records in the event you move. We have digital radiography capabilities for our dental patients as well. These X-rays provide valuable information in diagnosing dental and periodontal disease so we can start treatment and avoid the painful condition that gum disease will cause.

Ultrasound for Pet

Colony Animal Hospital uses modern ultrasound equipment, similar to that found in human hospitals, when diagnosing your pet. An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image in real time of organs in the chest or abdomen. This is especially helpful in pregnancy evaluations and the diagnosis of many other medical conditions. Biopsies may be performed using ultrasound guidance as well, which helps to eliminate the need for a more invasive surgical procedure. Ultrasound rarely requires sedation and generally is done on an outpatient basis.

In-House Laboratory Services

For your convenience, our hospital has the capability to perform a number of laboratory tests in house, allowing you to have results in a matter of minutes. Some of the tests we perform include biochemical profiles (kidneys, liver, pancreas, etc.), coagulation analysis (clotting), urinalysis, parasite screenings, and screenings for parvo virus, pancreatitis, and feline leukemia. If your pet requires more complex testing, we use a laboratory that specializes in veterinary diagnostic testing. Most results from this laboratory are available within 24 hours.

Additional Diagnostic Tools

While lab work, X-rays, and ultrasound are used to examine your pet’s internal structures and screen for diseases, Colony Animal Hospital relies on diagnostic tools that allow us to examine the eyes, ears, and blood pressure as well. These include:
